How Long Will My Greenhouse Plastic Last?

How often do greenhouse plastics need to be replaced?

With so many greenhouse plastic options available, you may not need to replace it every year. A simple 4 mil poly greenhouse plastic is only going to last for a year. There are many other options that offer a longer lifespan!

Plastic Features Lifespan
6 Mil Clear Tufflite
IR, UV, and AC coating, Anti-dust additive 4 Years
9 Mil ArmorClear Woven
IR, UV, and AC coating, Anti-dust additive 4 Years
12 Mil ArmorClear Woven
IR, UV, and AC coating, Anti-dust additive 4 Years
4 Mil Clear Tufflite
Anti-dust additive 1 Year

If you really do not want to deal with replacing greenhouse plastics, Twin Wall Poly-Carbonate Panels can be used to reduce the amount of plastic needed. The cost of these panels makes them impractical for covering an entire greenhouse, but they are a great material for end walls that will also help insulate the greenhouse if it needs to be heated.

When to Remove Greenhouse Plastics?

  • When the lifespan has been reached
  • When the plastic is discolored
  • When the plastic is too damaged to repair
  • Consider new plastic if heating or cooling costs are increasing
  • Look for alternatives to removal for winter
